Hello there! Do you love the look of the designer graphic tote bags but not the price? Me too! Today, I am sharing how you can make your own tote bag for a fraction of the cost and the best part is that you can customize the graphic to what you want. This DIY Painted Graphic Tote Bag is a simple and inexpensive option and is great for back to school.
Supplies (affiliate links):
- Tote Bag (I bought mine at Old Navy)
- Americana Acrylic Paint 2oz – Lamp Black
- Americana Fabric Painting Medium 2oz
- Paint Brush
I started by making my own vinyl stencil using my Silhouette Cameo. I am using the font called Blackout and sized it to fit the tote bag. If you don’t have an electronic cutting machine, you can use plastic stencils.
Next, I mixed two parts Acrylic Paint in the color Lamp Black to one part Fabric Painting Medium. The textile medium creates a washable, permanent paint for fabric by mixing this medium with acrylics. It improves the bond to the fabric and helps prevent cracking, peeling, and fading.
I used a makeup sponge to lightly dab the paint mixture over the stencil and onto the fabric tote bag. You want to be careful when applying paint around the edges. When it comes to paint, less is more.
Remove stencil and allow the paint to air dry 24-48 hours or heat set with an iron for 30 seconds. Wash DIY Painted Graphic Tote Bag inside out on the gentle cycle.
This DIY Painted Graphic Tote Bag is an easy and fun back to school project. Not only will you look stylist but you can spread a little love while toting this bag.
