Easy step by step tutorial on how to make and attach a pom pom to a hat – no special tools required!
I love coming up with easy DIY’s to help solve a problem. Recently, I was looking for a hat to wear this winter. The temperatures have been in the 40’s during the day and 20’s at night…brr. So, I went to Old Navy and found this super cute black and white hat that matched my coat. Too bad it didn’t have a pom pom on it. I really wanted a nice warm hat with a large pom pom on it. So, I thought I would make my own. This easy hack literally takes no time at all and I am going to show you how to make and attach a pom pom to a hat in case you run into the same problem. Or, if your existing pom pom comes off, you can put it back on.
- Embroidery Floss
Start by making a large yarn pom pom.
I am using regular yarn to make a large pom pom. You want to wrap the yarn around your hand very loosely about 150 to 200 times to create a large pom pom. I spread my fingers out just so the yarn comes off easily and it also make a larger pom pom. 200 times might sound like a lot, but wrapping goes quickly.
Once you have wrapped the yarn, carefully slide the yarn off your hand. Cut a separate piece of yarn, slide the yarn under the wrapped bundle, and tie a double or triple knot in the center. Make sure to leave a long tail.
Cut the loops on both ends of the bundle. Then trim the pom pom until it is even on all sides.
The pom pom is done. Now we just need to attach it to the hat.
Start by threading a large needle with embroidery floss that matches the color of the yarn. Tie a knot in the floss and start with the needle on the inside top of the hat. Push the need through the hat and into the pom pom. Do this step a few times until the pom pom is secure to the hat. It’s basically like sewing a button.
Finally tie off the pom pom to the hat by tying a triple knot in the embroidery floss. Use scissors to cut off the excess floss.
This DIY is so super easy to make. I personally don’t know how to sew and I am able to sew a pom pom onto a hat. I just loved how this turned out!
Thank you for letting me share how to make and attach a pom pom to a hat. Hope you stay warm this winter!
